#makeITsafePH: Phishing on Bank Accounts

I know this topic has been talked about for many times and ages BUT still, scammers evolved and still on the move to phish out not only our identity but also our hard earned money. Old news but still very rampant.

Before I start my sharing, let me tell this first. #makeITsafePH is a campaign initiated by Globe Telecoms to educate us internet and Information Technology (IT) users about cybersecurity and cyberwellness to avoid becoming a victim to online treats and crimes. I admit I’m no expert but I do hope that this story and upcoming ones will help you to be cyberaware.

Many months ago, or is it been a year (?), many banks asked all their clients to report back to their mother branch (the branch where we opened your bank account) to update our personal information. Of course, our work also coincides with the banking hours thus many had a hard time to do this. So what the scammers did was to ask ALL personal and private information including the login names and passwords thru email. What amazed me most is that I received emails from this scammers using the (name of) banks which I have an account to. I did not ever received a email from banks on which I don’t have an account. So my first question was: how did they know that I have an account on that bank?

photo from Bank of Philippine Islands thru Google search

Here are some signs to look for to determine a phishing scam email:

First, the email address “from” is not an official email address of your bank.

Let’s say for example that the official email of the bank is “customerservice@bankofrice.com”. for sure, the phishing scam email will never be the same BUT it might look like the same. Example, if that’s the official email, the phishing email might be “customerservicerep@bankofrice.com” or “noreply. customerservice@bankofrice.com”. Letter by letter and word by word it is not the same BUT on first glance it looks the same.

Second and the most notorious one, the email contains a link.

When you read the email, it will ask you to click that link. That link mostly is on blue letter/phrase that says “update account here” or any similar phrase that have the same meaning. Some scam email I received even had two to three links, making sure that you will be enticed to click it. Kung sa tagalong pa “sigurista talaga” na nabasa mo at mag click ka.

If you received an email with a LINK don’t click IT pls. it will start the phishing process if you do.

Lastly, check the body of the letter.

Most of the time, the body of the letter gives you the command to do all this written. Others, it plants fear on your spine that your money will be gone if you did not follow the set of instructions. Phrases like "your account has been locked" or "suspicious activity" or "verify your account here" or words like "suspended" or  "frozen"  then followed by "click the link to unlock" are sure signs of phishing.

For sure, as I said on the intro, scammers do evolved, so I guess, in the near future, they will change their MO (modus operandi). So what to do if this happened to you?

First, stay calm. As for me, I do nothing. I don’t click the link, I just mark it as “read” then the next time I visit my mother branch, I report it to the customer representative in person.

Second, visit your bank to verify that if you really need to update your account details. Specially if you receive emails many times in a week (persistent emailing).

Update your account in person NOT THRU EMAIL. While you are there, share to them the email that you received. They have a unit that chase these scammers. Yes you might lose a day’s worth of salary just to be absent for a day just to visit the bank. It’s better this way that to lose all your savings up to the last centavo from these scammers.

Here a true to life experience from a friend. She wrote this thru facebook status.

She received numerous emails for so called her bank. At first, she did not minded it for she is sure that it’s a scam. But since it’s a persistent emailing, she then click the bait link. And the pandora’s box went loose and lost her hard earned savings including their family budget (she is a breadwinner). The amount is four digit figure. It might be small to other standards BUT if you are the breadwinner and that amount is your family budget for the next days/weeks before the next salary, definitely, it is a HUGE amount of lost. Good thing her good friend is also a bank employee and told her what to do to get her money back.

So please, do remember, never ever make some updates and verification of bank accounts thru mail, email, call and text, not even on meet ups outside your bank. Verify and update ONLY thru your branch of account.

Greenwich Pizzeria
SM CDO Downtown Premier

Last 19th of this month of April, Greenwich gave us, the CDO Bloggers (Inc), a great way to have pizza and pasta. By inviting us to experience a pizza making camp in their latest branch to have the "pizzeria" ambiance, at the SM CDO Downtown Premier. to promote their latest offering this summer.

As we all know, the Greenwich Branch in SM CDO Downtown Premier is been running for nearly a year or so, but this branch is the second branch here in CdeO to have this pizzeria motif. the first one is located at the SM City C0DO Uptown. On this branch was one of many venues selected to hold a Pizza Making Camp. A summer activity for kids and kids at heart who want to know how to make our best loved pizza.

Pizza Making Camp Activity

Greenwich will hold a Pizza Making Camp for a minimum of 10 up to 20 max people per scheduled date. For a fee that starts at 300 Pesos, participants will be making a solo or a double sized pizza. Included in the fee are: the ingredients for the pizza, an apron, name tag and certificate. a plate of spaghetti supreme comes for an added fee.

The activity starts as the dough master will prep up the dough. participants can only see the dough prep up thru the pizzeria window not only due to HACCP standards and also rolling out the dough is really for trained personnel only.

After that, the participants will wash their hands as the crew will mise-en-place the dough and pizza toppings on the participants' table.

Then the dough master will guide the participants the step-by-step way of topping the dough. as soon as they are done, the crew will get all topped pizza and bake it for about 4.5 minutes.

The crew will give out the baked pizza and its "chow" time ;) and distribution of certificates.

so gather your family and friends and have this one-of-a-kind summer bonding activity. Just go to any Greenwich store for bookings and other details.

Had you noticed that the Limketkai Center is now becoming the Government's (specially Region 10 offices) new hub? First, the Robinsons Place CDO had a "lingkod bayan" center: SSS, GSIS, TIEZA, Tesda, PhilPost, Philhealth, have a mini office or kiosk to to cater our small and/or immediate concerns

The Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) R10 transferred to the 2nd floor of the Northern Concourse. Then, the Department of Tourism (DoT) R10 moved to Rosario Strip. As of latest developments, there are two new offices being hurried to finished to serve us the soonest time.

PhilHealth at the Gateway

The Philippine Health Insurance Inc (PhilHealth) is now relocated to the 2nd floor of the Gateway Building. If our source is right, it will serve the public any day this week. On its next door neighbor is the bureau of immigration will open soon.

Bureau of Immigration at the Gateway

Personally, i would like to thank all the think tanks who made this move possible. a One stop Government hub for added convenience.

2nd Bohemian Night at Apple Tree Resort and Hotel

It’s officially summer season and what is the best way to kick off this most loved season is to have a bohemian night by the shore. Apple Tree Resort and Hotel, one of Misamis Oriental’s and Metro CDO most loved resort, celebrated the opening of the summer with their 2nd “boho chic” exclusive themed party last 14th of April 2018.

It was a big night of fun with enjoyable ethno music from the Dhassig Band. Aside from the guitars and drums, they use tribal musical instruments mostly from the province of Bukidnon like the percussions and bamboo flute.

Before their act ends, a special fire dance from aPoi CDO. Tribal beat from Dhassig band plus awesome fire dance of aPoi CDO is definitely a hot performance. The goddess of fire and music will surely be pleased as we are.

After this hot performance, a little intermission, as Apple Tree Resort and Hotel, gave out overnight accommodation and pool access for good for two. They gave out this prize one each for the best "bohemian" dress male and female. All participants, specially for the female, they really all dress out for this event, all are deserving to win but of course, only one from each category should win.

When this awarding was done, the second act of ethno music continued. this time, from the band of Dodu Abrio and the Viajeros. the enjoyable music and dance continued until midnight.

My great gratitude to the ManCom of Apple Tree Resort and Hotel for having me to experience this kind of night. Big thanks and shout out also to my co-members of Cagayan de Oro Camera Club, it was great to shoot with you guys! until next time.

Speaking of next time, Apple Tree Resort and Hotel will have a (culminating) summer event this month of May and I hope to see you there. More details about this in the future posts. for the mean time, please do save these dates mga higala.

Smart provides CDO students emergency response training

PLDT wireless unit Smart Communications has organized an emergency response and management training for students of University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines in Cagayan de Oro City (USTP-CDO).

The whole-day workshop was a “training of trainers” that equipped the students with skills to be able to conduct their own preparedness lessons for members of their communities.

The activity is part of the company’s Tropang Ready program, a nationwide caravan of Smart’s TNT brand, which tours schools in the Philippines to teach the youth and their friends (tropa) the importance of disaster preparedness.

TNT Tropang Ready is an initiative under Smart’s advocacy for a #SafePH, which promotes preparedness through mobile solutions and on-ground activities to help communities mitigate disaster risks.

Last year, a large population of USTP-CDO students were stranded inside their campus as heavy rains and neck-deep flooding hit the city. A few weeks later, more than 2,000 students attended the TNT Tropang Ready disaster preparedness caravan initiated by Smart at their university. The event featured talks and disaster preparedness lessons by emergency management experts and representatives from the local government, disaster risk reduction and management office, University of the Philippines Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (UP Noah) Center, and Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), among other organizations.

For the training of trainers activity, which was the second phase of the Tropang Ready program, Smart tapped the expertise of Louie Domingo and Tan Palma of Emergency Management Center. They taught the participants how to prepare for and what to do during typhoons, earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, among other calamities.

Sir Louie Domingo demonstrating the proper "duck-cover-hold"
Among the lessons they taught the students were first aid and self-defense techniques, and pointers on how to assemble a “Go Bag” or an “e-Balde,” an emergency kit meant to help an individual or a family survive the next few days following a calamity. The kit included canned food, water, flashlight, batteries, cell phone and an umbrella, among other essentials.

Attendees were likewise tapped to be part of the Tropang Ready community on Facebook, where they could meet online with members of other Tropang Ready schools and share ideas on preparedness and response efforts in their own areas, among other topics.

TNT Tropang Ready “training of trainers” activity at USTP-CDO
.
The young members of the society play an important role in disaster preparedness, according to Ramon R. Isberto, PLDT and Smart public affairs head. “They have the mobility, the skills, the technological know-how—they have what it takes to spread the culture of preparedness,” Isberto said.

“TNT Tropang Ready aims to turn the youth into ambassadors of preparedness in their own communities,” said Smart community partnerships senior manager Nova Concepcion. “We are also working to help include disaster preparedness in the educational curriculum,” she said, noting that the goal of the workshop was to enable the students to conduct trainings in their own communities as part of their school’s extension program.

Bela Padilla Visited CdeO for the Centrio Art Tents

In celebration of the National Arts Month and of course the Love Month, Centrio Mall is having an arts expo called "Centrio Art Tents". The concept of the expo is to showcase the participants arts like paintings, calligraphy and other DIY projects.

As an added highlight to the event, Centrio Mall brought actress Miss Bela Padilla, who is also a budding artist. Many mall goers had the chance to meet and greet her. Im so happy to be part of it.

Miss Bela shared her artistic talents in this mini show. after some intros, she did one poem reading which she wrote. If I am not mistaken (yes i dearly not sure of this; just comment below if im wrong) the poem was part of her current movie "Meet me in St Gallen".

after the poem reading, she rendered a song while playing the ukulele with CDO's very own Kagay-an Ukulele Underground.

after these, she gave a rare chance to meet and greet the lucky patrons: selfies, gift giving to miss Bela, autograph signing.

Once again, thank you so much Centrio Mall and it's marketing team for making this event possible. wishing for more of these soon.
