The Marinela Neri-Velez String Program

I am also a lover of orchestral music most specialy in strings: violin, viola and cello. Do you remember the string quartet "bond"? ( That's my kind of music and when an orchestra made me cry or even teary, it means that orchestra is good. So when I heard that there is a budding and blooming orchestra here in Cagayan de Oro City I rushed to see and hear them play and to my surprise majority of the string players are kids.

For what I heard, the Marinela Neri-Velez String Program is a 10-year program that aims to build up a very first Philharmonic Orchestra here in Cagayan de Oro City: for the first 2 years is to build the strings section; then on the next 2 years is to build the wind (both woodwind and brass) section; then another 2 years for the percussion section; and then the last 4 years will be the merging of all sections.

All the players came from different ages and schools. The first time I heard them played was in Limketkai Luxe Hotel. They played Christmas carols for all the Hotel's guest at the lobby and they really played well. As I continue to listen I seen familiar faces. Agoi! Its our good friends in a renewal community. It turns out that their niece is one of the violinist.

When I shared this to my wife, she said that her student is also part of the program, she is a violinist too. From that day on, the mom of her student promised that she will update us in their public performances. True to her promised, she invited us to see her daughter perform, this time it was last 28th of December 2015 in Limketkai Mall's Event Center.

My wife and I would like to congratulate The Marinela Neri-Velez String Program for a very successful program and public performances. We are hoping to see and hear from you once more. To all kid performers, Job well done! keep it up guys!

Cebu Pacific Air Gets More International Flights

The Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB), granted additional entitlements to Cebu Pacific Air (PSE: CEB), for international routes:

Manila to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

From various points in the Philippines direct flights to Taipei, Taiwan

CEB was also designated as an official Philippine carrier to Russia thrice weekly flights each:

In the same board meeting, CAB approved CEB’s request to be designated as an official carrier under the ASEAN Multilateral Agreement on Air Services (MAAS). As soon as the Philippines completes the ratification of the relevant protocols of the MAAS, CEB will be able to operate unlimited flights between capital cities within the ASEAN region.

“We sincerely thank and commend the members of the Civil Aeronautics Board for enabling Philippine carriers such as Cebu Pacific to expand operations to key international destinations. We’ve always maintained that traffic rights are valuable resources that must be rationally allocated to carriers that are willing and able to utilize and operate flights. We look forward to mounting additional flights to meet the growing travel demand in communities we serve, and opening new routes to stimulate travel in emerging markets,” said Atty. JR Mantaring, CEB VP for Corporate Affairs.

CEB offers flights to a network of over 90 routes on 60 destinations, spanning Sydney, Dubai, Doha, Bali, and Tokyo (Narita). On December 17, 2015, the airline launched three new routes: Manila – Fukuoka, Cebu – Taipei, and Davao – Singapore. It is also slated to launch direct flights from Manila to Guam, its first US destination, on March 15, 2016.

Exciting Biscoff Biscoveries for Christmas

It is once again the sweetest time of the year and making the holidays even sweeter is Europe’s favorite cookie with coffee, Biscoff. Rice Crispy Treats with Biscoff Spread

With only 15 minutes preparation time, Rice Cripsy Treats with Biscoff Spread is easy to make and has minimal ingredients.

· 3 tablespoons butter
· 1/3 cup of Biscoff spread
· 1 10 oz. package of about 40 regular marshmallows or 4 cups of miniature marshmallows
· 6 cups rice crispy cereal

1. Melt butter and Biscoff Spread in large non-stick saucepan over low heat.
2. Add marshmallow and stir until completely melted.
3. Mix in rice crispy cereal, stir until well coated.
4. Spread the mixture using a buttered spatula or waxed paper evenly into a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray.
5. Cut into 2-inch squares when cool.

No-Bake Biscoff Bars

A unique treat to give away during the season because of its right mix of creamy and crunchy, this will surely be a hit.

· 2 cups powdered sugar
· 2 cups finely ground graham cracker crumbs
· 1 cup melted unsalted butter
· 1 cup Biscoff spread
· 1 ½ large dark chocolate bars
· 4 tablespoons Biscoff spread


1. In a large bowl, mix the powdered sugar and graham cracker crumbs. In a separate bowl, mix the butter and a cup of Biscoff spread, pour over the dry ingredients, and mix to combine.
2. Press the crust into a 9 x 9 pan that’s lined with parchment paper for the ease of removal later. Use a pastry roller or hand-press into pan.
3. Next, break the chocolate bar into bite-size chunks. Place in a small microwave – proof bowl and cover with the 4 tablespoons of Biscoff. Microwave in 30-second segments, stirring in between until smooth. Pour over the Biscoff layer and use an offset spatula to smooth over.
4. Allow to set for at least an hour before cutting.

With these Biscoff Biscoveries, the holidays will really be a treat.

Monster Kitchen's Food Bazaar Season 3

Yes mga higala, on its 3rd year, Monster Kitchen brings back one of Cagayan de Oro's biggers food event of the season, The Monster Kitchen Food Bazaar.

This years food bazaar have more stalls from different Monsterprenuers. These monsterprenuers exhibitors are those who gained certificates in Diploma Courses or Lifestyle Courses or both. Who knows, you might find the right monsterpreuer to cater for you wedding or other life treasured event. While you are there, buy some raffle tickets for a chance to win an electric oven that can jump start your baking skills.

Besides for the yummy goodies that being exhibited, they will also give baking and cooking demos for us to gain more knowledge and confidence in the kitchen. Personally, I am very interested to learn how to make ham which will be demonstrated by Chef Cathy Dano at around 4pm. For more sweetness for the upcoming noche buena and media noche Chef Geni Labadan and Chef Mon Cardenas will demonstrate how to make Meringue Cake and Cream Puff (respectively). For the kids, Chef Khoki Saavendra will have 3 batches of Cookie Decorating Workshop making this bazaar perfect for barkada and families.

Oro Integrated Cooperative Kicks-off their 50th Year

Last October 10th, the Oro Integrated Cooperative (OIC) kicks-off and gearing up for their upcoming 50th year of quality service to people. I am a witness of this quality service since I am also a member of OIC for nearly two years now. I will share that experience on my succeeding post, for now let me share to you this.

The said kick-off was attended by OIC bosses, partners, employees and us, some members of OIC and of the media, in Malberry Suites. The ceremonies was short, simple yet full packed: Inspirational messages from OIC President; launching of the 50th year Logo and; the four advocacies of the company.

OIC now has 120,000 members and still growing. They are from Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental and Bohol. What made me interested to became a member of OIC is that they are the only one who have an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) under Megalink.

Its all started last March 5, 1966 when Atty. Mordino Cua founded Oro Cooperative Credit Union  (OCCU) with a modest start up capital of 88 pesos then the 27 members followed and believed Atty. Cua's promotion on Financial Self-sufficiency and Economic Independence. Fast forward to 1991, OCCU became Oro Integrated Cooperative as we all know it today.

As the members grow, so thus its financial growth. For 50 years, OIC built an asset base of 2.1 billion Pesos. Posting a net surplus of 136 million pesos last 2014 which entitled every eligible member a 10.75% dividend rate.

So, tara na sa OIC! Financial Success is here. I should know, Im one of its members who benefited to their financial services. Ill share to you on the next article how, but to tease you, let me say that I traveled every year all because of OIC. My savings account in commercial banks only earns two centavos but here in OIC I earned more that five pesos a year in interest tax free.

Philippine Seven Corp aka 7-11 expands to Cagayan de Oro City

Last May 2015, we seen a lot of 7-Eleven stores sprouting and opening here in Cagayan de Oro City. To date, there are about six (6) stores - the latest was in Velez-Recto (aka Likoan-Kapitolyo). By the year's end, there will be four more to a total of ten. Cagayan de Oro is the second city in Mindanao that 7-Eleven expanded to. Davao City was the first last April 2015.

Last Saturday, Oct 24th, after months of soft opening, the 7-Eleven Limketkai Branch (the one in Limketkai Luxe Hotel) grandly opened. Coincidentally, it is also the 1500th 7-Eleven Branch. Gracing the event are 7-Eleven executives, Vice Mayor Ian Acenas and Mr. Lambino Limketkai.

The six stores here in Cagayan de Oro are: Georgetown/Liceo; Limketkai Luxe Hotel; Caltex Gusa; Primavera (pueblo de oro/SM CdeO); Petron Xavier Heights; and Velez-Recto (likoan-kapitolyo). "After Cagayan de Oro, we expand to Iligan City and Gen. Santos City next year" said Mr. Jose Victor Paterno, Philippine Seven Corporation President and CEO.

Before the event, I talked to a 7-Eleven executive and he said that he is amazed that the slurpee here in CdeO is twice or even more bigger sales than of Metro Manila. I then said to him that its because of two things: one is that there is a university nearby and the students loved it and; second is that it is hot like summer here. He is more amazed on the first than of the second, so I pointed to him the direction of MUST.

As a Manileyo transfered here in CdeO, I can clearly say that I grew up with 7-Eleven. The love affair started in 1995 as a college freshman who always takes out "big uhaw' sized Gulp or large slurpee with premium bola-bola siopao ir big bite spicy Hungarian sausage. Now that they have "city blends" why should i (still) go to an expensive coffeshop, which are both "from beans to cup" coffee.

Lastly, what makes me more in loved with 7-Eleven is that their new slogan "serving everyday heroes nationwide". You see, we the customers are always considered "heroes". I just then realized that no matter what profession or occupation we do, we are a hero to one another. That is why Im thankful to 7-Eleven for calling us hereoes and for coming here in Cagayan de Oro. Home sickness cured by the premium bola, city blends, gulp, big bites and slurpee.

Monster Kitchen Academy's 22nd Graduation Ceremonies

Let me first congratulate the newest chefs certified by Monster Kitchen Academy on their 22nd Graduation Ceremonies held in Xavier Estates Sports and Country Club last 27th of September 2015.

Monster Kitchen Academy is proud to announce that they now have a new batch of chefs. Four (4) batches in Fundamentals of Baking and Pastry Arts (FBPA) and two (2) batches in Fundamentals of Culinary Arts (FCA) with total graduates of 45 chefs, the biggest number of graduates so far. Some the graduates also took part in Kumbira 2015 who won in student category for the desserts, cakes and bread making. Also, (one) student took part in the Philippine Culinary Cup.

Chef Carsten Radke is the keynote speaker. For those you don’t know, Chef Carlson is the owner of the former La Vietta Wine Bar and Restaurant. He shared in his keynote speech that he was like the graduates about 30 years ago and step up into the challenges that molded him for what he is to today.

To the graduates, faculty chefs and admin staff, congratulations once more to your success. Thank you Monster Kitchen Academy for producing not only chefs but monsterepreneurs who gave and will give us quality meals and desserts.

Fusion Resto Café

There is a new place to hang out to here in Corrales Extention (near Gaisano Mall). Consortium Building houses new pubs, resto, dining places, karaoke bar and a lot more to come. One of its new tenants is Fusion Resto Bar which is located on the second floor.

I am both privileged and honored to be invited for the blessing of Fusion. This will be the new place for all diners both students and professionals to dine, drink and be merry.

Their  great designed palo-china furniture - tables, chairs, counter and in the wall decors - captivated me. As for the food, the fresh lumpia and the rainbow fish are just two of their specialties which is by the way taste so good. Ill definitely go back there to try other dishes. As for now I am sharing this to you so that you can also try it also. Share to me your thoughts.

Weekend Oyster Bar at Seda Hotel Centrio

Major throwback Thursday, 2007 November 2nd, My mother, my sisters and I went to mom's hometown in Pangasinan. After spending morning and lunch in the middle of the sea to experience tending a fish cage, we asked our uncle (mom's brother-in-law) to drop us off on the shore to spend more time playing and dipping. after a few minutes, baby sister yelled "oysters!" I hurried to her location and checked it out. It was indeed oysters on a rock. I shelled it with my swiss knife and ate it immediately.

My sisters became squeamish, not because of the oysters or me eating it raw but for health or sanitary reasons. Just imagine, me eating oysters on a beach, no washing (in fresh water), no boiling, no vinegar (like ceviche), just plain and simple dip on the beach (water) and eat straight. After a few pieces I literally found myself in the middle of oyster breeding ground. Instant oyster buffet. the next more pieces calmed my sisters down knowing that I am not (yet food) poisoned. They even helped me find more and bigger pieces.

Why I am sharing this to you? Well I just found out in social media that starting tomorrow, 11th of September, Seda Hotel Centrio will be having a Weekend Oyster Bar. It will be served in a platter with your choice of sauces. its up to you if you want it fresh or baked. Please click the photo to zoom in the details.

The Weekend Oyster Bar is open on Fridays from 6pm until 10pm, then all-day on Saturdays and Sundays. The Fresh Oyster Platter is PHP 360 per platter and the Baked Oyster Platter is PHP 450 per platter. Now, the question is, how many platters you can consume? Me? I think I can consume a platter of each, then next day, I'll get more. Oh! Seda Centrio! You awaken the oyster eating monster in me.

My First Dibs at Simple Joys Bakery and Cafe

The first time I heard about Simple Joys Bakery and Cafe is when a good on-line friend, which is a good travel and fashion blogger, sent me a personal message inviting us to try their new shop. As days go by, our (my wife and I) friends started to post their pictures and awesome stories about the cafe. So, until one day, out of the blue, after our visit at our house developer, we decided to have snacks at this simple and cute shop.

Simple Joys Bakery and Cafe is located in the middle of the block of Burgos-JR Borja-Capistrano streets. A simple yet cute shop that serves cakes, cupcakes, breads, pasta and coffee. Their best sellers are Ensaymada, Baked Ziti and Spaghetti Salsa Rosa. They also accept made to order cakes. Since we came unprepared we shared Baked Ziti and Choco Cupcake.

I love both we ordered. The ziti is great! Creamy and cheesy. The cupcake has the right amount of sweetness and the ganache is so wonderful. We will really go back for some more. I hope that time the best selling ensaymada is available.

Nic's Pizza Baguette now in Tiano-Dolores

Nic's Pizza Baguette, the pizza in baguette crust, who started in 14-21 Nazareth now came closer to the city proper by having a new branch here in Tiano-Dolores Streets. If you are new to the city or if you are using goggle maps, MC Fernandez Street is the new name of Dolores Street. This branch opened last August 26, 2015.

Before I continue, let me share to you this triva that the owner shared to me. The word "dolores" is a Spanish word for "pain, discomfort or suffering". That is why this street (as he points to dolores street) is called dolores because this street leads to the former/old cemetery from the cathedral. So after the funeral mass at the cathedral, the funeral march will go thru this street until the cemetery. Now we know mga higala.

Hawaiian Delight Pizza and Garlic Fries are the best sellers here in Nic's Pizza Baguette. The fries tasted like garlic bread. The Hawaiian Delight balances the salty taste of cheese and sweetness of pineapples plus the ham compliments the two.

CDR-King Solar LED Lights

Here in Mindanao, particularly here in Cagayan de Oro City, there will come a time that rotational brownouts is a lifestyle menace: Mall without or less air-conditioning, unromantic candle lit dinning, dark alleys, students studying in fast foods for free light and many others.The solution is either to buy expensive generators or buy solar LED lights just to illuminate homes and parking areas to continue the things we need to do.

IDEA 2015: An Invitational for Debate, Essay and Art

Our friends from the Rotary Club of CDO Premier launched a new project called I.D.E.A. 2015 An Invitational for Debate, Essay and Art. It is both academic competition among High School Students and at the same time to bring public awareness on the on-going creation of Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL). Participated by almost 100 High Schools here in Region X.

The event will be divided into four challenges: Oral Debate, Essay Writing, Editorial Cartooning and Acrylic Painting. All of which will tackle the primary theme "Peace in Mindanao". One of the focus of this event is to see the youths' perspective on the peace process in Mindanao, the creation of the Bangsamoro Region and the BBL.

The event will be held in Liceo de Cagayan University (LDCU) mainly in Rodelsa Hall. The Debates will be held in different LDCU's Audio-Visual Rooms and it will be televised on a local TV. The essays and the editorial cartoons will be featured in local and national newspapers. Acrylic paintings will be exhibited in a mall in Cagayan de Oro.

This event is FREE ADMISSION TO THE PUBLIC. Since this will be held in a university campus, I am encouraging everyone to submit ourselves to proper security inspection at the gates and abide to the university rules for mutual security, peace and order,

I really cannot wait what these bright youngsters can say and can do for the peace in our beloved country specially here in Mindanao. So don't forget September 11 and 12 IDEA 2015 Liceo de Cagayan University's Rodelsa Hall. See you all there!

Big Opening of Big Flat Bread

We all know about Big Flat Bread and its big yummy pizzas. After the unfortunate event in their Limketkai Center branch, they transferred and prospered here in Corrales-Ebarle Branch. To give more to their (loyal) costumers ample space and product upgrade, they have to close down for a moment to make some renovations. At last! That renovation and complete and they opened just in time for the city fiesta. On the eve of the big opening (aug 27) they gave big blast entertainment of music, drinks and a street party like other pizza chain has ever made. The party lasted until the next day August 28.

Customers lined up as early as 4am to witness the Big Opening of BFB. Before the opening, the owners and staff with their families gathered to offer Holy Mass. Blessing of the store and ribbon cutting ceremonies soon came after.

When the doors opened for business, the first 100 customers received a BIG treat! They were handed out BFB passports to entitle them FREE pizza for one whole year. That’s 1 pizza per month for the next 12 months. That’s about 2,400 peso savings. What a treat!

What’s New

BFB now have a bigger and ample space for our big gatherings. The newest thing in their menu is the Create your own Pizza for just 249 pesos per pizza (big size). You can choose to about 30 toppings: 2 kinds of sauces, 3 kinds of cheeses, 8 kinds of fruit, herbs and veggie toppings, 2 seafood toppings, and nearly 15 meaty toppings. If you can’t think of what to put into your pizza, fret not for they retained their five bestseller pizzas like the Godfather and Tropical Adventure.

They also offer rice meals, potato spuds and pastas. I recommend their Buffalo Chicken and Carbonara.  Of course, BFB’s made to order bigger and biggest pizza are still available in a budget friendly price. Another new to their menu which is I dearly loved most is the bottomless soda for just 49 pesos.

Limketkai Center’s Commit to be Fit: Sports, Wellness and Beauty Exhibit 2015

The Limketkai Center had a 3 day exhibit for sports, beauty and wellness last July 24 to 26.For three days various stores and shops exhibited their products and services within the Rotonda Area. Planet Sports and Marca Leon Corn Oil are among them. The said three day exhibit is hosted by Ms. Greanne Mendoza.

Day One: Meet and Greet Daniel Matsunaga

Daniel Matsunaga, Brand Ambassador for Planet Sports came to the event to promote wellness and fitness thru sports and physical activities like going to the gym. Before the said meet and greet, the contestants for Miss Cagayan de Oro 2015 and Barangay Gwapo 2015 came in to support the event and also to promote beauty and wellness.

Of course, meet and greet is incomplete without fans’ selfie with Daniel. After the program, Daniel, Greanne and the media went to Planet Sports LKK branch for media engagements.

Day Two: Nutrition Lectures and Cooking Demo of Chef Nadine Tengco

Chef and US certified nutritionist Nandine Tengco is the lady who coached Pinoy Biggest Loser contestants the right way of dieting and nutrition in losing weight, gave some lectures on diet and nutrition. The crowd, including me, is amazed about the fact and myths of eating. One classing example is hamburgers have less calories compared to fillet o’ fish. She further explained that hamburgers are grilled and the oils are dripped in the process unlike fillet o’fish which is battered and deep fried thus it absorbs more oil and the fish has more sodium to season the fish.

After the lectures, she had a cooking demo assisted by the students of Cagayan de Oro Institute of  Culinary Arts (CIC) . After her cooking demo, she again did the same lectures and demo at the Kave Restaurant of Limketkai Luxe Hotel.

Day Three: Zumba Session

Easy Rock Cagayan de Oro 96.9FM and Cagayan de Oro Zumba Instructors Network (CDO ZIN) had a free zumba session at 2nd floor activity area of the Limketkai Center.

Florekultura de Oro 2015 at Ayala Centrio Mall

This year's Florekultura de Oro is (being held) in Ayala Centrio Garden. Started last Aug 8, participated by various garden and landscape store in Bukidnon, Davao and Cagayan de Oro City. This is the first of two venues for the Kagay-an Festival Garden Show and Agri Fair - a Core Event for the Higalaay Kagay-an Festival 2015. The second venue is in Duaw Park (in between Carmen Bridge and Cathedral Tennis Court.

The official opening and ribbon cutting ceremonies was held in the afternoon and officiated by the City Mayor Oscar Moreno, Department of Tourism Region 10 Director Catalino Chan and Ms. Loren Yasay representing the Centrio Mall Management.

Florekultura de Oro 2015 is open during mall hours until August 31. You can buy various plants, flowers, herbs and you can also avail their landscaping services.

My First Dibs in Red Nectar Cafe

I was invited to the opening of Red Nectar Cafe last 8th of August 2015. Sadly, I only read the invitation three days after - I really hate others folder that cant be read on tablet. That is why i hurried to visit their cafe.

Red Nectar Cafe is located in Corrales Street gate of Xavier University Gym.Specializing on juicing fruits and veggies - which they call pure nectar. They also serve pasta dishes, sandwiches, salads, coffee, and waffles. 

For the opening week (Aug 8 to 15) they offered P88 promo on a selected drink/dish on a selected date. As for me, I got a chance to get the Iced Choco Dino last Aug 12 for only 88 pesos. its a chocomilk drink with choco syrup and ice quenching my thirst on a hot day.

The ambiance is great for both students and professionals. the seats are comfy and great for me who do online work for hours. This place is definitely for health buffs and coffee lovers.

Cant wait for to visit them again. hope it could be soon.
