Kataste: Cagayan de Oro's Taste

This is my first event thru CDO Bloggers Inc. After many times of wishing and praying that I'll be part of the group and to be in their events at last! finally I attended one. Thank you so much CDO Bloggers Inc. for making me part of the family.

20 December 2013
Domingos' Eatery
14th-21st Streets, Nazareth, CDO

Reynold Domingo, the creator of Kataste started his humble beginnings as a chef for a white water rafting company, from then on he started creating yummy sauces that propelled "Pizza de Oro" and "Capt. Richie's Back Ribs" into CDO's yummiest.

 photo Photo0723_zps30067a32.jpg
Sir Reynold shares the history of Kataste

Kataste (ka-tas-te) coined its name from "KAgayanon's TASTE". Its a ready-to-eat Oyster Sauce (RTE as a ketchup) not only good for cooking but also for dipping. A very first of its kind.

To demonstrate its yummyness, Sir Reynold treats us with a feasty lunch. He served:

Fried Chicken

and Pork Bar-b-que

 photo Photo0715_zps02c02642.jpg

It really good! Its cheaper than Steak sauce or BBQ Sauce. Since its ready to eat, it can be used as dipping or basting. Fried, broiled, roasted are just a few of its perfect match.

 photo Photo0710_zpsfb4ee875.jpg

Kataste comes in two flavors: Original and Hot. Original Variant named as "Oyster Meat Sauce" comes in a 280mL bottle with 65 Peso price tag and Hot Variant named as "Oyster Hot Sauce" comes in a 200mL bottle with 58 Peso price tag.

Don’t let scrapes and cuts spoil your child’s adventures!

Let’s face it: children are always quick, excited, and full of energy. They run, jump, and play whenever and wherever they want. Be it in the mall, school, park or the comforts of their own home, children are prone to cuts, scrapes, bruises, and other injuries that will surely make Mom worry.

These little hiccups in a growing child’s life can’t be totally eliminated. But – they can definitely be minimized. Here are some helpful tips to make sure children are safe from harm and accidents wherever they are:

1. Keep dangerous items like knives, cutters, scissors, nails and poisonous stuff locked and far away from young kids’ reach.

2. Make sure you keep tabs of your child when he or she is having fun in the playground. Check out the surface that they’re playing on, as they may have sharp parts or protrusions.

3. Make your child wear sturdy and slip-free shoes. Dressing them in pants or overalls may be a good thing to prevent scrapes when they fall.

4. Make your child wear safety gear like a helmet or knee pads when they’re biking, skating or participating in rugged sports.

5. Put up safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs if you still have toddlers.

6. Keep a first aid kit handy. Make sure they contain povidone, sterile bandages, cotton and dependable tape bandages that your kids will like.

Nexcare™ Bandages has a range of products that make sure your children are safe and protected when they suffer the scrapes and wounds that are part of growing up. Kids will love the cool designs ranging from Disney Princesses, Nemo and Cars. Not only do they protect booboos well, kids will love showing them off to playmates like a badge of honor.

Nexcare™  also has Active Strips Flexible Foam Bandages, Steri-Strip Skin Closure, Gentle Paper First Aid Tape, and Soft n’ Flex Bandages that are both child- and adult-friendly products, good for caring for bruises and cuts.

Nexcare™ products are available in major Mercury drug stores. For more Nexcare™  information and quality first aid tips, please visit

ITADAKIMASU! A Japanese Culinary Demo with Chef Audrey Ramos

21 September 2013
The Loop Business Hub
Lim Ket Kai Center
Cagayan de Oro City

Today was my first ever event here in Cagayan de Oro. I got this news in Facebook inviting everyone to a culinary demo. After confirming that this is a "open to all" event, I counted myself in.

Meals in Japan traditionally begin with the phrase itadakimasu (いただきます?) (literally, "I humbly receive"). The phrase is similar to "bon appétit", or saying grace to give thanks before a meal.

This event is a Japanese cooking demo Chef Audrey Ramos. Presented by The Loop, the newest condo tower in Cagayan de Oro developed by Vista Residences. Chef Audrey Ramos is a full time instructor of Culinary Institute of Cagayan de Oro (CIC).

Chef Audrey Ramos

She demonstrated some of my favorite Japanese dishes:

Philly Salmon Roll in both Outside out and Inside Out;

Philly Salmon Roll (Outside out / Nori Outside)

Philly Salmon Roll (Inside Out / Nori Inside)

then she cooked Seafood Tempura with Teriyaki Sauce. I liked her presentation, she put it on skewers, pretty clever ey!;

lastly she cooked Yakitori.

Get your juice and smoothie fix with nature’s nut

Health authorities recommend a daily intake of 6-8 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. But the truth is, most of us fall short in fulfilling this requirement because at most, we only consume about 2-3 servings per day.

This is why juicing became an instantaneous health trend, as it allows the body to get the right concentration of fruits and veggies targeted in a day. With the wide variety of fruits and veggies available, there is no reason for one drink to be bland and boring. More so, additional ingredients such as coconut water can actually boost the health properties of your juice. It provides extra hydration due to its excellent natural source of potassium and electrolytes, plus it has anti-oxidant qualities.

For a quick burst of morning energy, or just a light drink for your afternoon snack, here are juice recipes containing the water from the nature’s nut as your liquid ingredient.

To jumpstart your morning stamina, let a healthy beverage set out your day with these simple juice recipes.

Green Breakfast of Champions
1 cup frozen peaches, mangoes, or pineapples
½ cup berries
1 handful of kale or spinach
½ cup coconut water

A light snack, or just merely to ensure you’re getting your daily fruit and veggie fix, try this sweet and delicious juice.

Strawberry, Pear, and Coconut Water Juice
3 cups fresh strawberries without stems
1 pear, cored and seeded
¼ lime
1 inch ginger
½ cup coconut water

To replenish your lost electrolytes after a long day turn to the power ingredient that is coconut water and blend with your veggies. Kale is known for its cancer-fighting nutrients too.

Garden Green Coco Smoothie
½ cup coconut water
1 handful of kale
1 handful spinach
½ banana

For a convenient way to get your coconut water, Tropicana Coco Quench serves as best alternative for it keeps the natural goodness and freshness of coconut water with its Tetra Pak packaging. Tropicana Coco Quench has up to 8-month shelf life and is widely available in all leading convenience stores and supermarkets in 330ml and 1L packs.

Now we know that while juicing has been widely popular with its cleansing and weight loss properties, there is more to it than just trimming down your waistline. However, note that juicing cannot replace your regular meals, as only a balanced diet is the way to achieve a healthy lifestyle.

Tame the mid-year madness with Nestea RTD

June is a time of transitions in the Philippines. It signals the end of summer and the start of the school year. It’s the month when we declared our independence from colonial rule. It is the halfway point to a year that was hopefully good and is just about to get better.

So how to cope with this high-stress period of mid-year, when everything – from school starting to mid-year office reviews to higher-volume traffic turns your comfortable home ground into a battleground?

Start by taking the year not as halfway done, but halfway there. With this glass half-full perspective, it’s a great time to create new habits and start refreshed – after all, there’s six more months to go before we start anew.

Take time to relax. If you took the first half of the year at breakneck speed, accumulating leaves and not taking any sick days, then you’ve banked enough goodwill to take a break. School just starting? Read ahead and be ready. Don’t stress out just as the year begins. There will be plenty of time to do that between now and exam time.

Get off the beaten path. Bored with the same old day-in-, day-out monotony? Get ready to break out and do small things to spice things up. Change your route going to work or school, find a new hangout to unwind, even learn a new song for the monthly videoke session.

Find a new routine. After breaking all the old rules, it’s time to find a relaxing routine based on all the new things you have discovered. All of us find comfort in the tried and tested, especially when the bring back old memories. Just like the relaunch of Nestea Ready To Drink, bringing with it the classic goodness of iced tea in a convenient 500ml bottle, but now in exciting flavors of Lemon, Apple and Lemon Ice.

Now you’re ready to take the plunge into the rest of the year, and here’s hoping you have enough exciting memories to bottle up and take with you anytime, anywhere, just like Nestea RTD, plunge anywhere.

Going to CDO by plane - via Laguindingan International Airport

Laguindingan Airport got its name from it it host town -Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental. If my memory servers me right, new airports are made to serve two or more major cities/towns like the Bacolod-Silay; the future Panglao Airport (which will serve both Bohol and Panglao Islands; and this one -Laguindingan Airport which will serve both cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan (Lanao del Norte). Sadly, since this airport is about more or less 50 kilometers from CDO and/or Iligan, going to the said airport is now - as of this writing - a big question. Here's what I gathered so far.

As of now, Laguindingan Airport have no facilities to night flights thus all flights to and from here are from 6am to 6pm only. Cagayan de Oro (CDO in laymans term; CGY in airport code) flights are as follows (as of 21 June 2013 and this will change without prior notice, visit your airline website for more accurate details on their flights)

Cebu Pacific Air have : 7 flights from Manila plus 5 flights from Cebu plus 1 each from Bacolod, Davao, Iloilo and Zamboanga, for a total of 32 flights.

Philippine Airlines (operated by PAL Express) have: 5 flights from Manila plus 2 from Cebu plus 1 from Davao, a total of 16 flights.

AirAsia (operated by ZestAir) have a total of 6 to and from Manila.

Shuttles and Taxis:

The airport is situated near the sea and nearly a kilometer from the highway. Many are skeptical to ride a taxi due to its expensive fare due to distance of about 50Km or about an hour ride. Good thing Shuttle Services are now growing in numbers. here's some of the options: (info taken from Laguindingan Airport Facebook page

Magnum express is a passenger van provided by Magnum Radio.

They are stationed outside Magnum Radio in CM Recto. For passengers bound for Cagayan de Oro, their vans are stationed outside the airport’s arrival area.

Their first trip bound for Laguindingan Airport leaves at 4 am and the last trip at 3 pm. There is a van that leaves every hour in between. For CDO bound, just take their vans parked outside the arrival area.

Their regular rate is P249 per head. Right now, they are offering a promo rate of P199.

Baggage Consideration:

They allow passengers to bring one hand carry baggage and one extra luggage with no weight restriction. However, if a passenger has balikbayan boxes, there is an extra charge equivalent to one person.

Contact Number:

For inquiries, Magnum Express telephone number is 852-1999(this is not a MNL number).
LAX Shuttle is another good option. It sounds like you are in Los Angeles Airport but actually LAX here stands for Laguindingan Airport Express.

Their pick-up and drop-off point is located outside SEDA Hotel, Corrales Avenue near the entrance of Centrio Mall. For CDO bound passengers, they have a booth outside Laguindingan Airport arrival area.

LAX does not have a fixed schedule yet. Passengers should do the arrangement. You may text or call them through the numbers indicated below. The great thing about LAX is that even if there is only one passenger, they take him or her to the airport as scheduled with no extra charge.

Their introductory rate is 199. LAX regular fare is 249.

Baggage Consideration:

Passengers are allowed to bring one hand carry and one check-in baggage that does not exceed 40×28 inches in size. There is no weight limit.

Contact Number:

You may look for Angel at 09177000925/09177943131/09228732639.
This is good for those who travel in a group since you have to rent the entire car or van. If you travel alone, we suggest that you join a group.

Actually, it is not a terminal but a pick-up and drop off point. They are located at Limketkai Center, near DFA and at the Rural Transit Bus Terminal in Agora. Look for their dispatchers in white polo uniform with the logo of CAGATRANSCO. For CDO bound, their booth is located just outside the airport’s arrival area.

Since they are for rent, passengers have to contact the number indicated below for arrangements.

Their van would range from 1,500 pesos to 1,800 pesos while their car is 1,000 to 1,200. Vans can accommodate as much as 18 passengers while their cars can accommodate a maximum of 5.

Baggage Consideration

They have not provided any specifications regarding this matter. Their drivers are trained to assess the baggage if they could accommodate them or not. What is definitely not allowed are those that have strange odors.

Contact Number:

Look for Chit Claro at 09177925282 or 09165509688.
If you still have enough time then go to Bulua Bus Terminal and take Super 5 Aircon Bus. Why Super 5? They offer the convenience of transferring you to their Super 5 airport shuttle.

Take the Super 5 Aircon Bus at West Bound Terminal in Bulua. Then they will disembark you Laguindingan Highway. It is actually a junction where the Super 5 Airport Shuttles are parked. From the highway, the shuttles will take passengers to Laguindingan Airport. You could also take Rural Transit Buses. However, Super 5 operated airport shuttles prioritize their own bus passengers.

Prepare 85 pesos for the aircon bus and additional 50 pesos for the airport shuttle.

Baggage Consideration

There are no baggage restrictions.

Contact Number

You may call or text them at 09177042564 and look for Etta Duhaylungsod.

For sure this will be amended as time goes and I'll just blog about it when it came. As for me, I guess I'll use the LAX Shuttle and / or Super 5. Its close to my destination and as an immigrant, I know Gaisano-Centrio area better than other areas/routes.

Winning the Brewing Escapades of Bo's Coffee Club

Last May 10, 2013, I joined a contest from Bo's Coffee Club's Facebook site.

Brewing excapades photo brewingexcapades_zps899f744f.jpg

The rule is simple: just share your Bo's Coffee Club experience in less than 150 words. So my sharing goes like this:

"26 Aug 2009 was the first time i went to Cagayan de Oro to meet my GF's family. the next day was our first ever formal date, after which, we strolled in LKK. after a few minutes, her father texted her and he want us to meet them in Bo's Coffee in Rosario Strip. It was my first time to go to a coffee shop. From then on, every time i visit CDO (w/c is 2x a year)I always go to that same place to reminisce my life's many first. Thank You Bo's Coffee Club for being my accomplice"

But here's the Complete Sharing/Story.

26 Aug 2009 was my first time to go to Cagayan de Oro. It was my first time to Meet her family and also my first to go to Mindanao. The next day, we post celebrated our first year anniversary as BF/GF, it was our first formal date. After dinner, we strolled at the Lim Ket Kai Mall (LKK) after a few minutes, her father texted her inviting us for coffee at the Bo's Coffee Club's Rosario Strip. I was shy and puzzled upon entering the coffee shop. It was my first time to go to such place. Flashbacks of movie scenes where customer recite their orders in a fast fluid manner. Unlike me, who is clueless of what to say. "I think its better for you to order" I said to GF. "Just order what you want" she answered. So I just read whats on the board: the coffee I always dreamed of having - Cappuccino. The clerk asked a few questions and I got the hot big mug. As for GF, she had a hot choco, as for her parents and her sister those frappes which I can't recall. Her sister took this photo for us.

After this meet-the-parents' date, we all headed home. The next day, and the next day thereafter after bringing her to work or before getting her after work, I still go to that place to reminisce my life's many first.

May 15 was the deadline and I submitted my entry few minutes before deadline. Judging was on May 20. I thought I'll never win for my entry is abit unorganized and further more, I never got an email or PM from them. But still I'm curious who won and whats their story. So I visited their Facebook page and found this:

Praise God! I won!!!

June 4, I went to Bo's Coffee Club's SM Megamall Branch to pick-up my prizes.

Thank you Bo's Coffee Club for choosing my entry. After 4+ years I finally have an Bo's Coffee Club Mug. I dreamed of having it but I dont want to buy it. I wanted it as a gift or like this winning it. Sadly the autograph of Mr. Steve Benitez washed out from the dishwashing :( but stil I have a mug! YES! as for the GC, I promised we'll use it as a double date: me & GF and her parents to thank them for inviting us on that first coffee date. If that coffee date did not happened, i'll never have this sharing and this prizes. Daghan salama pud GF's parents!

Tips to fuel your body for fast recovery after workout

These days, people have become more conscious with fitness. Gyms are always populated, and some households even have their own exercise machines. Religiously, gym buffs would lift tons of weights and some would allot a specific time frame to fulfill their daily appointment with the stationary bike or treadmill, to build muscles. But despite the routine, most workoutholics are not really fully aware of how muscles grow.

100Plus Lemon Lime Flavor

They say no pain, no gain, and this is true with muscles as well. Our muscles become sore after workouts because they have incurred microscopic tears while they are being used. The more we work out, the more tears our muscles have. This is the first step step in the muscle building process.

100Plus Orange Blast Flavor

The next process is the critical part of muscle building. After all those tears, muscles need to recover so that they can regenerate, bulk up, and tone. Aside from losing the health benefits of muscle mass, improper recovery can also lead to injuries. So here are simple tips to ensure that you make the most out of every work out by recovering properly.

100Plus Original Flavor

1.     Play it cool. Cooling down muscles after workouts reduces inflammation and increases recovery time. It can also reduce soreness. Use ice packs to relieve post-workout pain in specific areas; or do a general cool down with an ice bath.

2.     Beef up. Protein builds muscle, but only complete proteins such as those found in eggs, meat, fish, and dairy products. Make sure you include carbs as well post work out, as your body will tap into your muscles for energy if you don’t have enough reserves.

3.     Pay the PRICE if you are truly sore. PRICE means protect, rest, ice, compress, elevate. While stressing your muscles can aid in work outs, not listening to your body can result in injuries. Even the hardiest of workoutaholics need to take a break every once in a while.

4.     Get enough sleep. Recovery = Sleep. So to recover completely, you must sleep adequately, at approximately six to eight hours a day.

5.     Replenish fluids and electrolytes. Dehydration is not only draining, it’s also dangerous. Aside from recovery, hydration also keeps you healthy, especially after a work out. Replacing lost fluids not only freshens you up, but also stabilizes blood volume. While water by itself is good, here’s something better. 100PLUS is a lightly carbonated isotonic drink that replenishes lost liquids and nutrients, including sodium, faster than ordinary water. So, if faster recovery is what you aim for, 100PLUS is the way to go.

Now that you know what the hard work in work outs are about, you can make the most of your activities without hurting yourself. Remember, take the time it takes for you to prepare for a workout, and take the time after to repair yourself.

Made for the active individual, 100PLUS Hydration Drink replenishes lost body fluids during intense workouts, heat exhaustion, and other strenuous activities. It contains carbohydrates, minerals, and electrolytes that a person needs to push harder when the going gets tough. With a light and revitalizing taste that’s carbonated to maximize refreshment, 100PLUS comes in 3 revitalizing flavors: Orange Blast, Lemon Lime, and Original. For more information, visit
